Day by day the food safety and quality awareness increasing across the globe. Monitoring of both the imported as well as exported food commodities for the food safety aspect becomes a crucial part. For effective monitoring, a good analytical method should be selected that addresses the sample preparation followed by analysis by using chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques to ensure the consumer's food safety.

Sample preparation is a huge challenge in this analytical process for two primary reasons. Food samples i.e. fresh as well as processed food samples were classified based on their nature, composition, texture, etc. The properties of the matrix may vary from matrix to matrix in the case of fresh as well as processed products. Sometimes, the processed products having multiple matrices which are challenging situations. this type of classification very essential for the selection of sample preparation methods from which one can expect better extraction and clean-up efficiency of target analytes.

By considering the above challenges, we discuss the modern sample preparation approaches (multi-residue and single residue methods) to handle simple as well as difficult/ complex matrices with a simplified approach by utilizing the advanced analytical tools. The use of the recently developed methods helped to enhance the high throughput of the commercial testing labs by reducing the cost and time required in sample preparation. These approaches are not compromising any data quality and in alignment with the fulfillment of regulatory requirements.
