Critical results for critical samples

Saturday, April 27 12:00pm - 12:20pm | Innovation Theater

Speaker: Federico Pea, MD, FISAC Full Professor of Pharmacology, Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, Alma Mater Studiorum, University of Bologna, Italy Head SSD Clinical Pharmacology - Dept. Integrated Management of Infectious Risk, University Hospital IRCCS Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria di Bologna, Bologna, Italy

Accurate minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) data, therapeutic drug monitoring, and biomarker utilization are highly significant in supporting a clinician’s decisions in optimizing dosing and improving patient outcomes.

Explore how making therapeutic choices based on these factors can positively impact treatment effectiveness. Discover the crucial role of the microbiology laboratory and the selection of the appropriate AST method in helping clinicians determine suitable treatment for critically ill patients with severe infections. Gain insights into the potential consequences of delayed or inaccurate results, especially for patients with multi-drug resistant infections, which can lead to suboptimal guidance for clinicians. Learn how accurate MIC data can help reduce turnaround times and favourably influence therapeutic decisions, particularly in the face of growing antibiotic resistance. Lastly, understand how the availability of accurate broth microdilution-based MICs for new antibiotics can contribute to improved patient outcomes, reduced lengths-of-stay, therapeutic dosages, adverse reactions, and costs.

New solutions for nucleic acid detection using 1-step RT-qPCR

Sunday, April 28 11:30am - 11:50am | Innovation Theater

Speakers: Agnė Žiupkaitė, Product Manager, Custom and Commercial Supply

This workshop will discuss new methods for detecting nucleic acids using a process called 1-step RT-qPCR.

RT-qPCR, or Reverse Transcription quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction, is a technique used to amplify and simultaneously quantify a specific DNA target. It's a widely used method because of its sensitivity, specificity, and speed.

In a 1-step RT-qPCR, the reverse transcription (conversion of RNA to DNA) and amplification (making many copies of the DNA) occur in the same tube or well. This can reduce potential pipetting errors and contamination, making the process more efficient and reliable.

Development and investigation of a customized rapid syndromic test for severe pneumonia

Monday, April 29 10:00am - 10:20am | Innovation Theater

Speaker: Dr Andrew Conway Morris, MBChB(hons), BSc(hons), PhD, MRCP, FRCA, FFICM, MRC Clinician Scientist, University of Cambridge, Hon Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine, Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, Mackintosh Professor, Royal College of Anaesthetists

The Applied Biosystems™  Taqman™ array cards offer a configurable solution to the molecular detection of pathogens from respiratory samples.  This talk will describe the research study which assessed the performance of a Taqman array card-based customized syndromic panel for detection of respiratory pathogens affecting patients with pneumonia in intensive care, its strengths and potential pitfalls, and how utility of such a panel could be maximized during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
