Breaking down PFAS & Microplastics: Sources to Solutions

Part 1: Microplastics analysis via FTIR Microscopy
Microplastics in the environment are of great concern as their true impact on human health and the environment is not yet fully known. Increasingly, environmental regulation agencies are evaluating methods for both rapid screening as well detailed analysis of microplastics. To address this need, Thermo Fisher Scientific provides a range of techniques for the analysis of microplastics. This presentation provides an overview of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy with its capability to identify and characterize microplastics. FTIR/FTIR Microscopy can make a significant contribution to the work being undertaken in this area of microplastics research and aligns with our mission at Thermo Fisher Scientific to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer.
Speaker: Ed George, Vertical Marketing Manager, Thermo Fisher Scientific

Part 2: Pyrolysis-GC-MS: A powerful approach for microplastics determination in food and environment
Micro and nano plastics can have complex toxicological effects on marine life through direct ingestion and/or leachates, and in addition represent a hazard to human health via exposure through consumption and inhalation. Among the analytical techniques used for the analysis of microplastics are Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy and microscopy, also pyrolysis-gas chromatography mass spectrometry (py-GC-MS). Py-GC-MS presents a promising approach for surveillance where throughput is critical enabling time-saving detection of bulk amounts of micro- and nanoplastics. In this study, the efficiency of Py-GC-MS considering both single quadrupole and high-resolution, accurate-mass spectrometry was investigated for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of microplastics.
Speaker: Charles Kazarian, Applications Specialist, Thermo Fisher Scientific

Part 3: Unlock your laboratories' potential with Thermo Fisher Scientific's PFAS testing solutions
Productive solutions for targeted quantitation of PFAS are critical in a variety of environmental matrices for routine testing laboratories.  However, non-targeted workflows to determine the extent of PFAS contamination are of increasing demand, due to the lack of commercial reference standards in the face of some 12,000 potential PFAS in the environment.  In this presentation, learn about targeted and non-targeted PFAS workflows that can address the whole PFAS problem in productive ways to stay ahead of the curve.
Speaker: Ed George, Vertical Marketing Manager, Thermo Fisher Scientific
