November 15 | Space Center Houston | 1601 E NASA Parkway, Houston, TX 77058

Attendees spent their day with us at Space Center Houston learning about new advances in isotope ratio mass spectrometry instrumentation and software, as well as applications available for the first time with the new instrument technologies. Key specialists from Thermo Fisher Scientific also presented during the events and answered questions.

An introduction to Orbitraps and their capabilities
Speaker: Ken Matuszak, Thermo Fisher Scientific

A novel mass analyzer that offers resolutions up to (FWHM) of 120-480k depending on the model, with mass accuracy better than +/- 1ppm. These high-resolution accurate-mass systems can detect a wide range of compounds and small molecules during both targeted and untargeted analyses.

Small molecule LC/MS applications with Orbitrap systems
Speaker: Ken Matuszak, Thermo Fisher Scientific

Examples will be shown with customer data in multiple application markets, centered around screening various matrices for compounds of interest.

The future of isotope ratio mass spectrometry
Speaker: Darren Tollstrup, Thermo Fisher Scientific

The direct isotope ratio analysis of intact polar molecules is made possible using electrospray ionization Orbitrap technology. This transformative analytical technique provides a wide range of isotopic information from singly and mulitply substituted isotopologues, mass independent fractionation, and position specific isotope analysis of organic molecules. We demonstrate sub-‰ precision and accuracy when analyzing various different oxy-anion compounds, and present the latest results and discoveries of this new development.

New applications for isotopes in life science
Speaker: Mike Wieser, University of Calgary

Isotopic analysis of biological samples providing new biomarkers for the monitoring  and diagnosis of diseases.

Thermo Scientific Neoma MS/MS: the future of MC-ICP-MS
Speaker: Darren Tollstrup, Thermo Fisher Scientific

The Neoma is the next generation MC-ICP-MS from Thermo Fisher Scientific with full MS/MS capabilities. Accurate, high-precision isotope ratio measurements are possible for the first time with an ICP-MS/MS system, and the Neoma achieves this without sacrificing sensitivity, stability, or exponential mass fractionation. We present exciting new results of in-situ 87Rb-87Sr analyses of terrestrial and extraterrestrial materials.
