Workshop

Mass spectrometric applications and advances for the analysis of NPS

Plenary session: Tuesday, 29 August | 12:00 - 13:00

Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS) are a growing global concern and present an ongoing challenge to forensic and toxicology laboratories, due to their diversity and constant evolution. Their incorporation into the illegal street market and the ease of purchase makes NPS challenging for sample analysis. Laboratories must develop ways to look for these NPS in an efficient and time-sensitive manner. The topics in today’s workshop will include use of paperspray mass spectrometry to investigate stability of drugs on dried matrices, and its utility to quantitate drugs in patient samples during emergency department presentation, as well as the use high resolution accurate mass Orbitrap (HRAM-Orbitrap) mass spectrometry for the development of a surveillance strategy for novel psychoactive substances.

Speakers: Stefania Boccuzzi, Dept of Analytical, Environmental and Forensic Sciences, King's College London, London, UK; Sandrine A.M. Mérette, Provincial Toxicology Centre, British Columbia Centre for Disease Control, Vancouver, Canada
