Thermo Scientific Molecular Biology Solutions include Finnzymes reagents, plastics and instruments for PCR and qPCR and products for animal diagnostics. Finnzymes was founded in 1986 with a mission to be the leader in the development of PCR, quantitative real-time PCR, transposon and RNA technologies. The goal was to develop products that make a difference and deliver results not achievable otherwise. In March of 2010, Finnzymes Oy was acquired by Thermo Fisher Scientific.

History

Finnzymes started off as a small biotech company in Finland, importing molecular biology products such as DNA polymerases and restriction enzymes to domestic markets. These sales activities created revenue to fund internal R&D projects aiming to find and develop new tools for scientists around the world. In 1991, Finnzymes launched their first product for PCR: DyNAzymeTM DNA Polymerase. This launch was followed by many others, adding new product lines – such as qPCR master mixes and transposon products – to the portfolio.

In 2003, Finnzymes introduced fusion protein technology that increased the processivity of DNA polymerases and significantly improved their overall performance in PCR. Phusion High-Fidelity DNA Polymerase, launched in 2003, was the first DNA polymerase developed using the fusion protein technology. It still continues to be the most recognized product developed by Finnzymes.

In 2005, Finnzymes expanded its product offering to PCR instruments and consumables, and founded Finnzymes Instruments. Piko technology, used in Piko Thermal Cyclers and PikoReal Real-Time PCR Systems, enabled one of the smallest instrument footprints on the market and provided fast and uniform thermal transfer from block to sample. With the thermal cyclers and plastic consumables completing the PCR product range, Finnzymes presented the High Performance PCR concept that combined the proprietary DNA polymerases, PCR instruments and reaction vessels into a truly integrated solution for PCR. This solution enables researchers to obtain high yields of error-free PCR products in as little as 15 minutes.

Finnzymes Diagnostics

Diagnostics was founded in 1999 to offer reagents and provide testing services to customers in the microbial, forensic, and veterinary-diagnostic research fields. The long experience and thorough know-how in PCR and real-time qPCR technologies facilitated the development of fast methods for animal diagnostics, such as paternity testing or mastitis detection. Today, the PathoProof Mastitis PCR Assay is used by dairy industry and veterinaries around the world to test for mastitis-causing bacteria in milk samples.

Key Technologies & Achievements

Finnzymes' core strength was its long experience and extensive know-how in PCR and qPCR technologies. Collaboration with research groups in both academia and industry was also an important part of refining scientific innovations into useful commercial products. Over the years the Finnzymes PCR product line grew from a single thermostable DNA polymerase to include all the components required for PCR: DNA polymerases, PCR instruments and reaction vessels.
