Virus discovery

The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne, Australia was the first scientific lab outside of China to sequence the 2019-nCoV genome. The team of researchers used the Applied Biosystems SeqStudio instrument to conduct sequencing to generate a reference sequence, which is fueling global surveillance and prevention efforts.

Whole-genome sequencing for discovery using NGS

In addition to targeted sequencing, Ion Torrent next-generation sequencing (NGS) systems can be used for de novo (whole-genome) sequencing of a SARS-CoV-2.

Sequencing by capillary electrophoresis

In addition to its initial role in identification of SARS-CoV-2, Sanger sequencing by capillary electrophoresis can be used to confirm RT-PCR results and provide confidence distinguishing SARS-CoV-2 from other respiratory pathogens. The Münch laboratory at the Goethe University used quantitative host cell proteomic studies to establish the cellular infection system for SARS-CoV-2 and determine the host cell response to infection by the virus. Based on their findings they were able to identify potential therapeutic candidates for preventing coronavirus replication in human cells.

There are two optical technologies commonly used to quantify nucleic acids: UV-Vis measurement and fluorescence measurement. A major challenge for microbiologists and virologists is the prediction of patterns of evolution and emergence of disease agents. RNA viruses like the coronavirus share the biological feature of high genetic variability, which causes them to appear as clouds of mutants. Current vaccine development efforts

Viral spike proteins reside on the surface of viruses and are used to bind to host cells, enabling viral infection. This structure will undoubtedly help to expedite the development and evaluation of a potential vaccine or treatment. Most notably, the structure was determined within weeks of purifying the spike protein; this quick pace heralds a potential revolution in vaccine and anti-viral development.

Animal testing solutions for SARS-CoV-2

Coronaviruses are a family of RNA viruses. Coronavirus infections are common in animals and humans. Some strains of CoV are zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted between animals and humans.

Current evidence suggests that the 2019 novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 originated from an animal source. Based on genetic sequence data, SARS-CoV-2 is a close relative of other coronaviruses found circulating in Rhinolophus bat (Horseshoe Bat) populations. There is the possibility that transmission to humans involved an intermediate host. There is currently no verified information as to which animals can serve as intermediate host.

Although the first efforts are directed at finding human transmission pathways, veterinary laboratories around the world have been diligently working to identify the animal reservoir and intermediate host, as well as animal-to-animal and zoonotic transmission pathways, host range, and possible roles of livestock and companion animals. There are two optical technologies commonly used to quantify nucleic acids: UV-Vis measurement and fluorescence measurement. Viral spike proteins reside on the surface of viruses and are used to bind to host cells, enabling viral infection. Animal testing solutions for SARS-CoV-2

Coronaviruses are a family of RNA viruses. Coronavirus infections are common in animals and humans. Some strains of CoV are zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted between animals and humans.

Current evidence suggests that the 2019 novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 originated from an animal source. Based on genetic sequence data, SARS-CoV-2 is a close relative of other coronaviruses found circulating in Rhinolophus bat (Horseshoe Bat) populations. There is the possibility that transmission to humans involved an intermediate host. There is currently no verified information as to which animals can serve as intermediate host.

Although the first efforts are directed at finding human transmission pathways, veterinary laboratories around the world have been diligently working to identify the animal reservoir and intermediate host, as well as animal-to-animal and zoonotic transmission pathways, host range, and possible roles of livestock and companion animals. Information from these investigations is critical because it may hold the key to preventing further introductions of the virus into the human population.
