Proficiency testing and collaboration in supporting laboratory capability in the SEA region : FMDCaryll WaughProficiency testing (PT), as part of a general quality management system, can help to drive improvements in diagnostic capability for veterinary diagnostics.  Suitably structured programs can be used to assess the fitness-for-purpose of several elements of the diagnostic pathway such as: sample processing, assays used, equipment, staff training and reporting procedures, to provide an overall snapshot of laboratory competence.  This presentation will outline how the ACDP-PT program supports FMD preparedness and network capability within Australia and ways in which this could be extended within the Asia-Pacific region.15 mins
The importance of early diagnosis and continued surveillance to support an FMD response / management programDr. Jeffrey Michael HammondFoot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is highly infectious, present in many regions of the world and has a significant effect on the livelihoods of livestock keepers and associated industries. The highest risk of spread is through the movement of live animals and animal products, and current options for control require adequate disease surveillance, rapid reporting of outbreaks and implementation of control programs usually involving animal movement control, vaccination and improvements to biosecurity practices. In FMD free countries, continued awareness and early diagnosis of an FMD outbreak is vital to enable an effective and rapid control program. In endemic countries, the implementation of appropriate surveillance and diagnostic tests will greatly assist in FMD control strategies by providing real time locations of current FMDV strains and choice of suitable vaccines. 15 mins
