Cement is the main global construction material used for a plethora of different applications. It is important to optimize the production process to minimize the carbon footprint and maintain strict quality criteria. In recent years X-ray diffraction (XRD) became one of the main tools for process monitoring because the technique allows identifying and quantifying all constituents of final products and intermediate like OPC Cements or clinker and enables producers to comply with important international norms. Additionally newly developed decarbonized cement products heavily relay on amorphous compounds, where XRD is the most capable method of quantification. Raphael Yerly is a seasoned professional in the field of XRD (X-ray diffraction) instrumentation, with over 23 years of experience at Thermo Fisher Scientific. Holding a degree in engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, as well as an MBA, he combines technical expertise with business acumen in his current role as Product Manager for the XRD product line.

Simon Welzmiller is Global Application Specialist for X-ray diffraction and has been with Thermo Fisher Scientific since 2017. He has more than 10-years experience in various XRD applications and techniques and holds a PhD in Solid State Chemistry from Leipzig University and a master’s degree in chemistry from LMU Munich.
