Get the facts on antibiotic resistance and its effect on public health

Microbes, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi, can evolve to resist the drugs intended to eliminate them. Antibiotic resistance (ABR) occurs when bacteria become resistant to antibiotics.

Even when antibiotics are used correctly, drug-resistant bacteria can still develop. Currently, the growth and spread of ABR is accelerating. This is driven by the misuse and overuse of some medications, the high mutation rates of certain pathogens, and the challenges associated with developing new antibiotics.
