What are emerging contaminants and what solutions are available?

Emerging contaminants are also referred to as contaminants of emerging concern. These emerging environmental contaminants are either becoming more prevalent or are now detectable via new analysis methods. Their increased presence could potentially harm aquatic ecosystems, organisms and humans; because of this it is important to monitor for the presence of these compounds. Emerging contaminants include, but are not limited to:

  • Pharmaceutical and personal products (PPCPs)
  • Hormones and endocrine disruptors, flame retardants
  • Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs)
  • Nanoparticles

Some emerging contaminants can be detected and quantitated by using single or triple mass spectrometry (MS) in targeted analysis, while the identification and quantitation of unknown emerging contaminants rely on GC or LC coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry.
