Fermentation production facilities can utilize the Thermo Scientific™ HyPerforma™ Single-Use Fermentor (S.U.F.) instead of traditional stainless steel cleaning-in-place/sterilization-in-place (CIP/SIP) fermentor vessels without modifying their existing procedures. As expression systems are moved to production volumes, they can easily be scaled from a benchtop fermentor (or flask) to the S.U.F. Unlike hybrid solutions—cell culture bioreactors converted to fermentation systems—the S.U.F. has been specifically designed to meet the rigorous demands of microbial fermentation and delivers yields that are comparable to traditional CIP/SIP systems.
The stirred-tank reactor is one of the most commonly utilized reactor types in biotechnology. The Thermo Scientific™ HyPerforma™ Single-Use Bioreactor (S.U.B.) is designed as a stirred-tank reactor for animal cell culture and has the unique advantage of utilizing completely single-use product contact surfaces. Available in 25 L to 2,000 L working volumes, the S.U.B. is one of the industry’s most widely used bioreactors today.
Techniques used to separate anchorage-dependent mammalian cells from microcarrier beads include: sedimentation using conical or incline settlers, centrifugation, acoustic resonance, and spin filtration and microfiltration. These techniques often use sophisticated equipment that require a significant capital expenditure as well as routine maintenance and between-use cleaning and sterilization. Single-use systems are widely adopted in upstream and downstream bioprocessing, from media storage containers and filling manifolds to mixing vessels and bioreactors.
