Our approach to biobased plastics

What are biobased feedstocks?

With a global focus on decarbonization, major resin companies have begun to supplement fossil fuel feedstocks with biobased feedstocks. When this change is implemented, the same monomer is produced, and there is no change to any technical specification.

Energy companies integrate energy from both traditional power plants and renewable sources into the power grid. Customers can opt to receive renewable energy, but this doesn't mean they are physically using only renewable energy. The customer receives the same power from the grid without interruption or change to their service while benefiting from the lower carbon footprint of the renewable energy.

We partner with our resin manufacturers to prioritize sustainability, helping to ensure that they secure more sustainable feedstocks to align with our commitment to reducing our environmental impact. Incorporating these alternate feedstocks results in a direct 1:1 reduction of fossil-fuel feedstock. The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), an independent third party, provides a mass balance carbon accounting framework for traceability across the entire value chain. Our manufacturing sites are ISCC PLUS certified, allowing us to pass the sustainability benefits directly to our customers.

No revalidation requirements

Resin suppliers are able to easily integrate alternate feedstocks into their manufacturing process, as the resulting biobased monomer is chemically identical to those originating from fossil-fuel-based feedstocks. This allows you to easily incorporate our biobased products into your process at any stage, eliminates the need for revalidation, and provides a tangible reduction in Scope 3 emissions.

Bioproduction Sustain Program

By enrolling in the Bioproduction Sustain Program, you will receive the same trusted products, as well as a detailed annual report that quantifies the emissions reduction achieved from your eligible product purchases. This enables you to maintain the same quality and regulatory compliance of your processes, while helping you achieve your sustainability goals. Customers can use this carbon emissions reduction report in their own sustainability tracking to help them meet their own sustainability goals.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Biobased plastics are fully or partly made from biological raw materials, as opposed to the petroleum or fossil fuel options used in conventional plastics.

Biobased plastic products from Thermo Fisher Scientific are indistinguishable from traditional fossil fuel-based plastics and to have a lower carbon footprint without sacrificing performance. Additionally, revalidation or retesting may not be necessary, as the product is chemically and molecularly identical to the existing fossil fuel-based version.

Incorporation of biobased and fossil fuel-based resins occurs at the monomer level, which helps ensure that the properties and characteristics of the biobased plastics remain consistent with traditional fossil fuel-based plastics. Plastics with biobased content by mass balance reduce reliance on fossil fuel-based resources while maintaining desired performance.

The ISCC is an independent initiative and globally recognized certification system supporting more sustainable, traceable, and deforestation-free supply chains. It sets standards and provides certification for various sectors, including agriculture, food, feed, chemicals, and biofuels. The ISCC aims to promote more sustainable production and trade while addressing environmental and social aspects.

ISCC PLUS certification is one of the certification schemes under the ISCC certification system. One focus area under this scheme is on sustainability and traceability aspects of biomass-based products, such as biofuels, bioplastics, and biochemicals. ISCC PLUS certification verifies chain of custody, traceability throughout the supply chain, and compliance with sustainability criteria through independent third-party certification. It provides assurance to customers and stakeholders that the certified products meet strict sustainability requirements.
