DMEM (Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium) is a widely used basal medium for supporting the growth of many different mammalian cells. Cells successfully cultured in DMEM include primary fibroblasts, neurons, glial cells, HUVECs, and smooth muscle cells, as well as cell lines such as HeLa, 293, Cos-7, and PC-12.
RPMI 1640 Medium was originally developed to culture human leukemic cells in suspension and as a monolayer. Roswell Park Memorial Institute (RPMI) 1640 Medium has since been found suitable for a variety of mammalian cells, including HeLa, Jurkat, MCF-7, PC12, PBMC, astrocytes, and carcinomas.
MEM (Minimum Essential Medium) can be used with a variety of suspension and adherent mammalian cells, including HeLa, BHK-21, 293, HEP-2, HT-1080, MCF-7, fibroblasts, and primary rat astrocytes. Try Opti-MEM I Reduced-Serum Medium for greater transfection efficiency. This improved formulation allows for at least 50% reduction of FBS supplementation with no observable change in growth rate or morphology.
DMEM/F-12 (Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium/Nutrient Mixture F-12) is a widely used basal medium for supporting the growth of many different mammalian cells. Cells successfully cultured in DMEM/F-12 include MDCK, glial cells, fibroblasts, human endothelial cells, and rat fibroblasts.
The Gibco media bottle has its own bottle weight for keeping order in the water bath. The bottle weight fits both the 500 mL and 1 L bottles, keeping them upright in the water bath further reducing the risk of contamination.

Cell Culture Media Best Practices
Here are a few simple tips & tricks to help ensure your cell culture media is maintained for optimal performance.
If refrigerated, warm your cell culture media before use. Your cells would be cold at 2-8°C, and you would be too!
Keep your cell culture media protected from light. Light exposure degrades the essential vitamins in media that your cells need to grow.
Once you have supplemented your cell culture media with FBS, place the complete media into the refrigerator (2-8°C ) to maintain performance.
Use your supplemented media within 2-4 weeks to reduce the chances of contamination and the impact of pH drift.
