1949—Bovine tuberculosis
Production of tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD) for tuberculosis skin test begins at our facilities in the Netherlands, one of the world’s largest PPD production facilities.

1998—Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)
The Prionics-Check WESTERN kit detects the first BSE-positive cow in routine testing, preventing its meat from entering the food chain and helping avoid human infection.

2004—Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD)
The first VetMAX real-time PCR kit is developed and launched for the detection of BVD virus in Europe. It’s used in European countries to help eradicate the virus and monitor the disease.

2007—Bluetongue (BT)
VetMAX real-time PCR kits for all BT virus genotypes and kits for subtypes BTV1, BTV2, BTV4, BTV6, BTV8, BTV9, BTV11 and BTV16 detection are approved by the European Community Reference Laboratory (CRL). They are currently used by several European countries for outbreak detection.

2008—Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS)
We launch VetMAX PRRSV Reagents and Controls for RNA detection of NA and EU PRRS virus strains.

2012—Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)
With the addition of the PrioCHECK FMDV Type Asia 1 and FMDV Type A ELISA test kits to the PrioCHECK FMDV NS and Type O Kits, we are offer the most extensive product portfolio of proven solutions for FMD virus detection.

2014—Trichomoniasis (Trich)
The VetMAX-Gold Trich Detection Kit is the first USDA-approved, real-time PCR test to detect Tritrichomonas foetus. Trich is a sexually transmitted disease that causes embryonic loss and infertility, resulting in significant economic loss within the cattle industry due to open (nonpregnant) and late-calving cows.

2014—Avian influenza (AI)
The VetMAX-Gold AIV Detection Kit is the first USDA licensed PCR-based kit for the detection of AI virus. It significantly improves outbreak detection, especially in import/export poultry products.

2015—Swine influenza (SI)
We offer two USDA-licensed VetMAX-Gold real-time PCR kits for SI virus screening and subtyping to global pork producers for the rapid detection of this highly contagious viral infection of pigs.

2017—Q fever
We have the most extensive portfolio of diagnostic PrioCHECK ELISA and VetMAX real-time PCR kits enabling the detection and quantification of Coxiella burnetii in sheep, goats, and cattle. These products also help countries manage Q fever and its zoonotic risk.

Diagnostics help advance Ireland’s Bovine TB Eradication Program

In the 1950s, Ireland set out to eradicate bovine tuberculosis (bTB). Now they have a very successful bTB eradication program in place that has dramatically reduced production losses, maintained their export status and helped their beef and dairy industry flourish. “The foundation of the program is surveillance underpinned by effective diagnostics, including annual testing of all live cattle in every herd in Ireland,” said Dr. Margaret Good. “Thermo Fisher Scientific diagnostic tools, namely Tuberculin PPD and BOVIGAM, have been the diagnostic tools of choice for testing in live animals for many years, and thus these have helped Ireland to achieve its goals.”

Where would FMD control be without diagnostics?

Dr. Don King leads a team of 25 scientists and students who have recently celebrated 60 years of the World Reference Laboratory for Foot-and-Mouth Disease (WRLFMD) in support of global initiatives to control FMD. “As part of our work as an international FMD Reference Laboratory for the OIE and FAO, we regularly receive samples from countries where the disease is endemic to provide information about what FMD virus strains may be present, contributing to our understanding about the global FMD situation,” said Dr. King. In the event of an FMD outbreak, FMD Reference Laboratories can test thousands or even millions of samples for serological testing purposes. These tests can also be useful in endemic countries to support extensive surveillance activities.

How did diagnostics keep the Swiss BSE program a step ahead during a crisis?

When the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) crisis hit, Switzerland was a step ahead of many countries in Europe. The Swiss National Reference Laboratory had already implemented measures that would pay off in two ways: by controlling the disease in the cattle population and by protecting the human population. To start, Switzerland was the first country to apply extra surveillance using a rapid diagnostic test. “When we received our OIE reference lab mandate, we were one of the few countries in continental Europe with indigenous BSE cases,” said Dr. Torsten Seuberlich, professor at the University of Bern NeuroCentre Department of Clinical Research and Veterinary Public Health.

The Pirbright Institute and Thermo Fisher Scientific partner amid bluetongue outbreak to offer diagnostic solutions

The Pirbright Institute is home to the OIE World Organisation for Animal Health Reference Laboratory for bluetongue virus (BTV). Dr. Carrie Batten is head of the Non-Vesicular Disease Reference Laboratory and OIE Reference Laboratory lead for BTV. Her team is responsible for receiving samples for diagnosis from the UK and around the world and responding to disease outbreaks. In 2007, the Pirbright team developed a series of 24 bluetongue detection tests. Working together with Thermo Fisher Scientific, they enabled laboratories in countries across Europe to use these tests to detect and serotype a positive sample within a couple of hours.
