In a recent publication (Cell Stem Cell 8:326 (2011)), researchers demonstrated that FGF Basic was able to alter the BMP-4–initiated differentiation of human embryonic stem cells from the extra-embryonic lineage to the mesoderm lineage.
This paper also showed evidence for the involvement of downstream signaling markers MEK and ERK and transcription factor NANOG. The implication of the work is that NANOG (and by extension FGF Basic) not only plays a role not only in maintaining the pluripotent state of stem cells, but may also play a role in lineage outcomes.

The results of a recent study aimed at understanding how metastatic prostate cancer (PCa) cells target bone
marrow hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) and gain a foothold in the organism are now available. In their experiments (J Clin Invest 121:1298 (2011)), the researchers used Qtracker® reagents for in vivo tracking of HSC and CellTracker™ reagents for in vitro tracking of osteoblast/HSC/PCa cell cocultures. Their data suggest that PCa cells directly compete with HSC in the bone marrow, which could play a role in metastasis.

Using Zenon® technology to label an antibody that recognizes an antigen present on neuronal (but not non-neuronal) brain-derived human and ape tissue, researchers were able to sort cell populations and then evaluate the methylation patterns in each group (Genome Res 21:688 (2011)). Understanding the epigenetic effects that drive the differentiation of stem cells to various fates is critical for the understanding of brain maturation and function.
When labeling delicate samples, such as isolated prefrontal cortex nuclei, speed and labeling specificity are critical factors. Antibody labeling using Zenon® labeling technology is ideal for these types of investigations.
