OMass Therapeutics - Driving Native Mass Spectrometry of Membrane Proteins for Pharmaceutical Research

OMass is the first company to offer native MS of membrane proteins, the largest family of drug targets, using the new Thermo Scientific Q Exactive UHMR system. Membrane proteins are largely hydrophobic molecules which require highly heterogeneous micelle assemblies for solubilization. This renders them extremely challenging for analysis by many biophysical methods, and they were long believed to be incompatible with native MS approaches using time-of-flight detection. Innovations in Orbitrap-based MS have opened the door to studying megDalton protein assemblies with exceptional structural insight.

How to sniff a planet? NASA’s Cassini Quadrupole MS

In 1997 NASA launched the Cassini mission. On board the orbiter was a quadrupole mass spectrometer weighing 9 kg, housing four hyperbolic quads capable of analyzing masses in the range 1-99 m/z. Its purpose was to sniff the atmosphere of Saturn and its moons as it flew by. It was able to confirm presence of water vapor, methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, simple organics and complex organics identified in the plume on Enceledus.
