Pro-HGF Activator (HGFAC) is a gene that encodes the Hepatocyte Growth Factor Activator, a serine protease involved in the activation of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). HGF is a critical growth factor that regulates cell growth, cell motility, and morphogenesis by activating the c-Met receptor. The HGFAC protein is synthesized as an inactive zymogen, known as pro-HGF activator, which requires proteolytic cleavage to become active. Once activated, HGFAC can convert inactive pro-HGF into its active form, thereby facilitating various physiological processes such as tissue regeneration, wound healing, and organ development.
