BACE1 is a member of the peptidase A1 protein family, and is expressed by neurons and astrocytes in the brain. BACE1 catalyzes the cleavage of beta APP at the extracellular, amino-terminal domain leading to the formation of amyloid beta peptide. Amyloid beta peptide is the major constituent of amyloid plaques in the brains of individuals afflicated with Alzheimer's disease.
