Fatty acid-binding protein 7 belongs to the Calycin super family or the Fatty-acid binding protein (FABP) family of proteins. FABP7 (BLBP, B-FABP) is involved in the transport of some hydrophobic ligands with potential morphogenic activity during CNS development. It is required for the establishment of the radial glial fiber system in developing brain, a system that is necessary for the migration of immature neurons to establish cortical layers. It is now reported that FABP7 is over expressed in renal cell carcinoma in comparison to normal renal tissues and thus acts as potential tumor marker for renal cancer. B-FABP also acts as a marker in acute ischaemic stroke where an elevated level of FABP7 is seen.
