Glutamyltransferase (gGT) from human kidney is a membrane-bound enzyme that transfers the gamma-glutamly moiety of gamma-glutamyl compounds such as glutathione to an acceptor, which may be an amino acid or a di- or tripeptide or water. The principal functions of gGT may be hydrolysis and metabolism of glutathione. Various human gGT isoforms have been found. The molecular mass of gGT for normal kidney is 90kDa and gGT can be used as a renal cell marker.
