Peptide 1 has 94% sequence homology with rat and peptide 2 has 94% sequence homology with rat and mouse.
PER2, a mammalian homolog of the Drosphilia period gene, shares a 40% homology with PER1 including the protein dimerization PAS domain. A strong circadian rhythmic expression in the suprachiasmatic nuclei supports the view that the mammalian PER gene functions in the circadian clock with PER2 being a component of the circadian oscillator.
