SLC26A7 (solute carrier family 26 member 7) is a chloride-base exchanger and/or chloride transporter that is expressed on basolateral membrane of acid-secreting cells in renal outer medullary collecting duct (OMCD) and in gastric parietal cells also. SLC26A7 belongs to conserved family of anion transporters SLC26 isoforms which display tissue-specific expression patterns in epithelial cells and several SLC26 members function as chloride/bicarbonate exchangers that include SLC26A3 (DRA), SLC26A4 (pendrin), SLC26A6 (PAT1 or CFEX), SLC26A7, and SLC26A9 among which SLC26A7 and SLC26A9 also function as chloride channels. In renal tissues, Slc26a7 co-localizes with AE1, a well-known Cl-/HCO3- exchanger, on the basolateral membrane of (acid-secreting) A-intercalated cells in OMCD cells, and in the gastric tissue, SLC26A7 co-localizes with AE2, a major Cl-/HCO3- exchanger, on the basolateral membrane of acid secreting parietal cells. SLC26A7 acts as a sodium-independent DIDS-sensitive anion exchanger mediating bicarbonate, chloride, sulfate and oxalate transport. SLC26A7 maintains the electrolyte/acid-base homeostasis in kidneys by acting as a distal excretory segment-specific anion exchanger, specifically chloride, and plays a major role in gastric acid secretion.
