Immunofluorescent analysis of SMAD9 showing staining in the cytoplasm and nucleus of MCF-7 cells using a SMAD9 polyclonal antibody (Product # PA5-35162) followed by detection using a fluorescent conjugated secondary antibody (green). Cytoplasmic actin was stained with a fluorescent red phalloidin (7units/ml, 1 h at 37°C). Nuclei were stained with DAPI (blue) (10 ug/ml, 10 min).

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the SMAD family, which transduces signals from TGF-beta family members. The encoded protein is activated by bone morphogenetic proteins and interacts with SMAD4. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
