T box brain 1 (TBR1) is a member of a conserved protein family that share a common DNA-binding domain, the T-box. T-box genes encode transcription factors involved in the regulation of developmental processes. Disruption of the mouse TBR1 homolog demonstrated a critical role for TBR1 in early cortical development. TBR1 expression is largely restricted to the cerebral cortex, where during embryogenesis it distinguishes domains that give rise to the paleocortex, limbic cortex, and neocortex.
