Thickvein C is an isoform of Thickveins, which is a receptor for the crucial Decapentaplegic morphogen. Decapentaplegic is responsibe for induction of dorsal-ventral polarity in the fly. Imagine the affects of its removal: the back of the fly fails to develop and instead develops into a neurogenic ectoderm resembling that usually found in the ventral portion of the trunk. The decapentaplegic pathway is also central to the establishment of segmentation and the morphogenesis of wing and eye.
