FIGURE: 1 / 2
Store lyophilized/reconstituted at -20°C; once reconstituted make aliquots to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Please remember to spin the tubes briefly prior to opening them to avoid any losses that might occur from material adhering to the cap or sides of the tube.
For reconstitution add 50 µL of sterile water.
Specific Species Reactivity: Arabidopsis thaliana, Splanum lycopersicum, Triticum aestivum, Vicia faba (protoplasts)
Uncoupling protein is a plant mitochondrial inner membrane carrier that dissipates the proton gradient by allowing protons to re enter the matrix without driving ATP synthase, reducing the efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation. This mild uncoupling lowers reactive oxygen species formation, helps balance redox states, and can generate heat, contributing to stress tolerance and metabolic flexibility. Plant UCPs are activated by fatty acids and inhibited by purine nucleotides, and they may transport organic acid anions in addition to protons, linking respiration to metabolite flux. Expression increases under cold, drought, high light, and oxidative stress, and overexpression often enhances resilience by limiting oxidative damage, whereas loss of function can elevate ROS and impair growth. UCPs work alongside alternative oxidase and other respiratory bypasses to fine tune energy production, signaling, and adaptation.
