USP22 is the component of the histone acetylation complex, SAGA, that acts as a deubiquinating enzyme. It is a cofactor for gene promoters like MYC. Depleting USP22 prevents MYC from controlling the transcription and expression of thousands of other genes. Therefore, it can be postulated that USP22 is the critical mediator of MYC induced oncogenesis.
