Target Information
The ZMYND10 gene encodes a protein that contains a MYND-type zinc finger domain, playing a crucial role in the assembly and function of cilia. Specifically, ZMYND10 is essential for the proper axonemal assembly of both inner and outer dynein arms, which are critical components of motile cilia. Mutations in ZMYND10 are associated with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a genetic disorder characterized by defective ciliary motility leading to recurrent respiratory infections and male infertility. In model organisms like mice and Drosophila, ZMYND10 expression is restricted to tissues and cells with motile cilia, such as chordotonal sensory neurons and sperm cells. Additionally, ZMYND10 has been identified as an epigenetically regulated tumor suppressor in various cancers, with its downregulation affecting processes like cell proliferation and tumor progression. The gene's dual role in ciliary function and tumorigenesis underlines its importance in both normal cellular physiology and disease pathology.
