5 Key Takeaways from LC Columns Tips and Tricks Webinar

The webinar, hosted by Hai Ning, Regional Marketing Manager for APJ, featured Adham Ahmed, a global product manager with over 15 years of experience in chromatographic applications. Adham provided insights into LC column attributes for small molecules, setting up new columns, troubleshooting techniques and column care tips to prolong column life. Below are some key takeaways:

  1. LC Column Attributes and Setup: Understanding LC column attributes (particle size, surface area, carbon load) and proper setup (checking COA, column care guide, solvent compatibility, and conditioning) are crucial for optimal performance and interaction with analytes.
  2. Root Cause Identification and Troubleshooting: Effective troubleshooting requires identifying whether issues originate from the column or the system and addressing common problems like insufficient conditioning, system leaks, or system blockages.
  3. Retention Time Consistency: Consistent retention times depend on proper column conditioning, system maintenance, and addressing factors such as possible leakage and system errors.
  4. Impact of Mobile Phase: The age and pH of the mobile phase can significantly affect column performance and retention time. Using a pH outside the recommended range can cause irreversible damage to the stationary phase.
  5. Column Maintenance: Regular column washing, effective sample preparation, and the use of fresh mobile phase solvents and additives are essential for maintaining column performance. Consult the column care guide or technical support team for further assistance.
