Pushing the Boundaries of Productivity with New Innovations at M&M 2019

Electron microscopy has revolutionized science because it allows researchers to magnify structures up to 10 million times. Observing samples at this level of detail has led to remarkable advances ranging from ever smaller and faster computers to higher-performance metals and a better understanding of diseases.

At Thermo Fisher Scientific, we continually work to raise the bar with new innovations that advance electron microscopy to help our customers push the boundaries of productivity and innovation. And as Microscopy and Microanalysis 2019 (M&M 2019) gets underway this week, we’re proud to unveil several new solutions that will help researchers and engineers around the globe accelerate their discoveries. All of these advancements enable them to obtain best-in-class results while delivering the ease-of-use required to extend electron microscopy to a broader range of users.

Among the innovations we’re introducing is a next-generation Krios solution that can help scientists at leading research institutes and pharma companies around the globe solve more structures even faster and obtain high-resolution structures of even smaller proteins. With three key components, scientists can take cryo-EM to the next level:

  1. Our new Krios G4 cryo-transmission electron microscope, the only automated cryo-TEM instrument on the market to fit in a standard-size lab height
  2. Falcon 4 camera, which boosts productivity and image quality with a more sensitive direct electron detector that captures images up to 10 times faster than its predecessor
  3. EPU Quality Monitor and Data Management powered by Athena, an easy-to-use software that improves productivity with on-the-fly pre-processing, letting researchers remotely monitor the quality of data as it’s being collected

Thermo Fisher Scientific is continually working to develop new innovations that advance electron microscopy.

We’re also announcing a new scanning/transmission electron microscope (S/TEM) called Spectra, which delivers advanced atomic-scale imaging and analysis, all in one tool. It offers unprecedented ease-of-use for the widest range of materials, making it easier for materials scientists and semiconductor lab researchers to characterize a broad variety of structures at the atomic level.

In addition to these new products, we’re extending our Avizo software with Avizo2D to help researchers quickly extract the data they need from their electron microscopy images. The new AI-powered automated imaging and analysis software makes it easy for researchers to build customized “recipes” or automated, reproducible workflow scripts that speed up their image analyses. It will save hours of manual work, enabling scientists to get the accurate results they need more quickly.

If you’re at M&M this week, be sure to stop by booth #1038 to see all of these innovations and more. It promises to be an exciting week full of demos, workshops, and networking opportunities. We hope to see you there!
