Investing in African Mining – Indaba

Editor’s Note:  Because French is a major language heard at the upcoming Indaba show, today’s article is written in both English and French (see below). Cape Town’s summer months are crammed with festivals, fun runs, concerts and carnivals. Mixed in with this is Mining Indaba – the world’s largest mining investment conference and exhibition. La ville du Cap, spécialement en été, est très animée, avec de nombreux festivals, concerts et animations. Mining Indaba, la plus grande exposition dédiée au monde du secteur minier en Afrique, y ajoute sa part. From February 3-6, 2014, over 7,000 delegates from 100 countries will descend upon CTICC (Cape Town international convention centre) in South Africa to make connections, and conduct business — truly transcending the African continent. Du 3 au 6 février 2014 plus de 7000 personnes, conférenciers, exposants et visiteurs de plus de 100 pays différents s’y rencontrent au CTICC (Centre d’Exposition International du Cap), en Afrique du Sud, et créent des connexions professionnelles au sein de représentants de l’ensemble du contient Africain. Mining Indaba is a great opportunity to share new products and developments and exchange views with customers that range from junior exploration companies to the world’s largest mining organizations. This makes it a great place to network, learn the current and future trends and see many of our customers who have been attending for many years. Mining Indaba est une opportunité importante pour nous, en nous permettant d’interagir et d’exposer nos nouveaux produits et développements, et ce avec l’ensemble de la communauté, des sociétés minières nouvellement crées jusqu’aux leaders du secteur. C’est un endroit et un moment exceptionnel pour rester en contact avec nos clients, discuter avec eux, comprendre et anticiper leurs besoins immédiats et futurs. There are two things in the Indaba schedule that I am sure not to miss:

• Gold exploration is a large part of our customer base and therefore the ‘Gold Commodities Review’ and everything related to gold grabs my interest.
• Mining Insight – the industry explained.  This session is a perfect opportunity to update your knowledge and about current trends.

Less educational, but another highlight of the show is the invitation-only Official Mining Indaba Gala Dinner that takes place at the Vergelegen Estate in Stellenbosch – a world renowned wine producer visited by heads of state and celebrities.  This is always a very pleasant environment where one can relax with friends and colleagues and tease out the stresses of the day.  And the venue is especially appreciated by wine lovers. If you want to explore outside the convention centre, situated at the foot of Table Mountain is the V&A Waterfront harbor, which offers unforgettable experiences of shopping, entertainment, sunshine and sea breezes, and a panoramic back drop of the mountain. With over 450 retail outlets selling everything from fashion, homeware and curios, to jewellery, leather goods and audiovisual equipment, as well as seasonal attractions and over 80 eateries, the V&A Waterfront is one of South Africa’s most popular visitor destinations.  Speaking of eateries, my two favorites are Chapmans Peak restaurant in Hout Bay Harbour overlooking the beach, and the Blue Peter in Bloubergstrand. With its picture postcard views of Table Mountain, it really captures the essence of the spirit of Cape Town. Joel has a favorite restaurant of his own.  He prefers the Hussard Grill in Greenpoint, close to V&A Waterfront, as he found here “the nicest of some South African meals, especially the meat, in a very good ambiance, and reasonable price, including the wine!” Joël a aussi son restaurant favori.
