About This Kit
The Oxytocin (OT) ELISA quantitates OT in serum, plasma and other biological fluids.
Principle of the method
The Competitive Oxytocin (OT) ELISA research use only kit is designed to quantitatively measure OT independent of species. A OT standard is provided to generate a standard curve for the assay and all samples are read off a user generated standard curve. Standards or diluted samples are pipetted into a coated microtiter plate and Biotinylated Detection Ab specific to OT is added. Excess conjugate and unbound sample or standard are washed from the plate, and Avidin conjugated to Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to each well and incubated. Then a TMB substrate solution is added to each well. The enzyme substrate reaction is terminated by the addition of stop solution and the color change is measured on a microplate reader. The concentration of oxytocin in the samples is then determined by comparing the OD of the samples to the standard curve.

Target information
There are two proteins encoded by this gene, oxytocin and neurophysin I. Oxytocin is posterior pituitary hormone which is synthesized as an inactive precursor in the hypothalamus along with its carrier protein neurophysin I. Together with neurophysin, it is packaged into neurosecretory vesicles and transported axonally to the nerve endings in the neurohypophysis, where it is either stored or secreted into the bloodstream. The precursor seems to be activated while it is being transported along the axon to the posterior pituitary. This hormone contracts smooth muscle during parturition and lactation. It is also involved in cognition, tolerance, adaptation and complex sexual and maternal behaviour, as well as in the regulation of water excretion and cardiovascular functions.
