Dr. Defne Magnetta completed her medical training at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, followed by pediatrics residency and cardiology fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She completed advanced fellowship training in pediatric heart failure, cardiomyopathy, and transplantation at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, where she remains on faculty. Dr. Magnetta’s clinical and research interests focus on improving assessment of acute rejection, by both invasive and noninvasive means, to improve long-term graft outcomes.

Dr. Nicoleta Arva is a pediatric anatomic pathologist specializing in the diagnosis of a large variety of childhood diseases based on the analysis of tissue samples (biopsies or large surgical resections). She received her medical degree from the University of Medicine, Iasi, Romania. After medical school, Dr. Arva moved to New York City, where she completed a PhD program with an emphasis on cancer biology at the City University of New York.
After graduating from doctoral studies, she pursued residency training in Anatomical and Clinical Pathology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Arva continued her training with two fellowships: one in general surgical pathology at New York University Langone Medical Center, and the second in pediatric pathology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania. In 2012, she joined Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, where she currently practices as a pediatric anatomic pathologist.
Dr. Arva is also appointed as an Associate Professor of Pathology at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine. She is active in multiple professional societies (SPP, USCAP, APC) serving in various committees. Dr. Arva’s clinical and research interests include transplant, pediatric cardiovascular, pediatric gastrointestinal, and thyroid pathology. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts (more than 50 of them), several book chapters, and she participated in multiple task forces that established clinical guidelines in these areas.
Dr. Arva is also a coinvestigator on multiple grants/sub-awards sponsored by NCI and NIH, serving as a central pathology reviewer for various multi-institutional projects. In addition, she has an interest in medical education—she is the pediatric pathology fellowship and residency program director, she developed innovative learning modules for trainees that come to rotate at Lurie, and she is active in test development for the American Board of Pathology and ASCP.
