Target Information
The SARS-CoV-2 Beta Spike Protein S1/S2 refers to the specific regions of the spike (S) protein found in the Beta variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19. The spike protein is essential for the virus's ability to infect host cells and is composed of two main subunits: S1, which contains the receptor-binding domain (RBD) responsible for attaching to the host cell receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), and S2, which facilitates the fusion of the viral and host cell membranes. The S1/S2 cleavage site is a critical point where host proteases cleave the spike protein, activating it for membrane fusion and viral entry. The Beta variant, first identified in South Africa, has mutations in the spike protein, including at the S1/S2 cleavage site, which may affect the virus's transmissibility and resistance to neutralizing antibodies, impacting vaccine efficacy and treatment strategies.
