Albendazole is a benzimidazole derivative that acts as a broad-spectrum anthelmintic, primarily used in the treatment of parasitic worm infestations, including those caused by roundworms, tapeworms, and flukes. Structurally, albendazole is characterized by a benzimidazole ring fused to a thiazole moiety, which enables its mode of action by binding to and inhibiting tubulin polymerization, thus preventing microtubule formation in the intestinal cells of parasites. This disruption impairs glucose uptake, leading to energy depletion and eventual parasite death. Albendazole is administered orally and is effective against a wide range of intestinal and tissue parasites, making it a critical component of mass deworming programs globally. While typically well-tolerated, potential side effects can include liver function alterations, necessitating monitoring in long-term use. Ongoing research explores its efficacy in combination therapies and potential applications in treating emerging parasitic diseases.
