Immunohistochemistry of MPEG1 in paraffin-embedded human Breast cancer tissue. Samples were incubated in polyclonal MPEG1 antibody (Product # PA5-121768) using a dilution of 10 µg/mL, followed by HRP-Linked Caprine Anti-Rabbit IgG at a dilution of 2 µg/mL and DAB.

Target Information
The MPEG1 (Macrophage Expressed Gene 1) gene encodes a protein known as Perforin-2, which is part of the immune system and plays a crucial role in host defense mechanisms. Located on chromosome 11, MPEG1/Perforin-2 is primarily expressed in macrophages, dendritic cells, and other immune cells. The protein functions by forming pores in the membranes of pathogenic bacteria, leading to their lysis and destruction. This pore-forming capability is integral to the innate immune response, providing a rapid means to target and eliminate intracellular pathogens. MPEG1's activity contributes significantly to the antimicrobial arsenal of the innate immune system, and deficiencies in this protein can lead to increased susceptibility to infections. Ongoing research is focused on understanding how MPEG1/Perforin-2 can be leveraged or augmented to enhance immune responses and potential therapeutic applications in infectious disease and immunotherapy.
