Gastrokine 3 (GKN3) is a member of the gastrokine family, which is a group of proteins predominantly expressed in the gastric epithelium. GKN3, like its family members, is involved in the maintenance of gastric mucosal integrity, playing a role in cellular proliferation and apoptosis, which is crucial for preserving the homeostasis of the gastric tissue. These proteins are also believed to be involved in the protection against gastric injury and the regulation of gastric acid secretion. Alterations in the expression levels of GKN3 have been noted in various gastrointestinal diseases, underlining its potential role as a biomarker for gastric cancer. Although direct structural information and specific molecular interactions of GKN3 are limited, the gastrokine family's overarching involvement in epithelial defense mechanisms highlights its importance in gastric health and disease.
