CDK2, or Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 2, is a critical member of the cyclin-dependent kinase family, which regulates cell cycle progression. CDK2 is particularly important for the transition from the G1 phase to the S phase and for the progression through the S phase of the cell cycle.
Cyclin E is a regulatory subunit that binds to CDK2 and activates its kinase activity. The binding of Cyclin E to CDK2 is necessary for the proper functioning of CDK2, as cyclins regulate the activation and specificity of CDKs.
Together, the CDK2/Cyclin E complex plays a pivotal role in cell cycle regulation by phosphorylating key substrates, including the retinoblastoma protein (Rb), which leads to the activation of E2F transcription factors and the initiation of DNA replication.
