From small beginnings …
Come big discoveries. The idea was simple - show how easy the Ion PGM™ System was to use, and its speed and robustness in the field (literally). And what better way to do this than to take it on the road. After all, who would believe you could fit a functioning sequencing lab into a Mini?
So how did we do it? We purchased two cars (one for the Ion PGM™ Sequencer and one as a mule car and power generator) and got to work. The aim was to be able to sequence a 46-gene cancer hotspot panel in under two hours, in all conditions and situations, with reproducible results that matched those that we had observed in more conventional laboratory environments.
The Ion Mini Tour launched on 29th August 2012. The idea was simple – demonstrate the Ion PGM™ Sequencer and give customers the chance to get hands-on.
The Ion Mini Tour has already visited several cities in the UK including Aberdeen, Nottingham, Cambridge and London. They even made their way to Saudi Arabia, holding centre stage at Arab Lab and undertaking a tour of the Middle East.
London Kings College
A very windy day but we managed to sequence the cancer hotspot panel and discuss the data.
The Netherlands
The Dutch sales team set up the Ion Mini lab and discuss human genetics with researchers from Leiden University.
Cardiff University
Still working well in the rain, parked on double yellow lines.
Vienna
Following a long drive from Paris to Vienna, we stop off the Ion User Group Meeting before leaving for Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic.
At a rate of 1 publication a day and increasing, the Ion Torrent™ platform is delivering 4x the number of publications of our nearest competitor.
Outstanding pace of publishable data is in testament to the accessibility, ease of use and data turnaround with this technology.
