The HoloTC (Holotranscobalamin) ELISA quantitates HoloTC in serum, plasma, and other biological fluids
Target information
Holotranscobalamin (holoTC) is a complex of vitamin B12 and the protein transcobalamin, which is essential for transporting vitamin B12 into cells. It binds to the receptor CD320, facilitating the transport of vitamin B12 across cell membranes, where vitamin B12 functions as a coenzyme for critical enzymatic reactions. Transcobalamin, also known as transcobalamin II, is a beta-globulin protein synthesized by ileal enterocytes, endothelial cells, macrophages, and hepatocytes, which transports newly absorbed vitamin B12 from the intestines to the liver and other body organs via receptor-mediated endocytosis. Genetic polymorphisms in the transcobalamin gene (TCN2), such as TCN2 776C->G and TCN2 67A->G, can influence the levels of holotranscobalamin in the serum, thus impacting overall vitamin B12 status in individuals. The holoTC level is often used as a biomarker for assessing vitamin B12 deficiency, which is critical for diagnosing conditions related to inadequate vitamin B12 absorption or metabolism.
