Sean Carey is the Scientific Affairs Senior Manager for the Transplant Diagnostics (TDx) section of Thermo Fisher Scientific.
Before taking this post in May 2022, Dr. Carey was the Consultant Clinical Scientist responsible for the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) laboratory at University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP), UK.
His career in the transplantation laboratory began at Guy’s Hospital, London, in 1992 where he was employed to investigate the efficacy of immunosuppressant drugs, and the immunological desensitization of highly sensitized renal patients. Dr. Carey moved into the routine transplant laboratory at Guy’s in 1996 and completed his master’s in immunology the following year.
Taking the role of Chief Biomedical Scientist at UHP in 2002, he implemented flow cytometric crossmatching and led the team to introduce One Lambda’s suite of Luminex tests. Following a few years in senior laboratory management, Dr. Carey focused his attention back on transplantation in 2014 as Lead Healthcare Scientist in H&I at UHP, commencing a doctorate course with the University of Manchester at the same time. He achieved Doctor of Clinical Science (DCLinSci) in 2020 and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists the same year, having completed the examinations during his doctorate.
Dr. Carey has published extensively throughout his career, beginning with a first author paper in 1992. His doctorate research led to three first author publications, including a review of HLA expression in 2019, which has been cited almost 50 times to date.
