Mmgt2 mediates Mg(2+) transport and may provide regulated pathways for Mg(2+) transport in the Golgi and post-Golgi organelles of epithelium-derived cells. Magnesium is an essential metal, but few selective transporters have been identified. The two separate gene products, Mmgt1 and Mmgt2, comprise the family that we have termed membrane Mg(2+) transporters (MMgTs), and the proteins reside in the membrane and mediate Mg(2+) transport. The transport of Mg(2+) is saturable and studies have identified that Mmgt2 fusion proteins reside in the Golgi complex and post-Golgi vesicles, including the early endosomes in COS-7 cells transfected with the respective tagged constructs. Among related pathways for Mmgt2 are transport and binding events, in particular, transport of glucose and other sugars, bile salts and organic acids, metal ions and amine compounds.
