The Philippines’ legislature continues to push forward on establishment of a Philippine DNA Database Analysis System. The goal is to formalize the procedures that will support criminal investigations by matching suspect and crime scene samples, as well as aiding in identifications of missing persons and unknown human remains.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Lorna H. Santos of Philippines National Police Crime Laboratory describes her vision for the DNA database as her team optimizes the validation, standardization and quality metrics that are needed to establish a new database. Her goal is to be at par with other nations that already have databases in place, with a good success rate in hits and to provide a positive impact to society by getting criminals off the street. The laboratory has also utilized Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Human Identification Professional Services (HPS) to validate their new systems, allowing the lab to focus more efforts on the criminal investigations.
In this video, she notes how important it is to get the right people on-board. It is imperative to have the scientific team, law enforcement, and society all working toward the same goals.
