With an eye toward the future, leaders of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Pharma Services business selected Thermo Scientific™ SampleManager LIMS™ software as the foundation for the group’s Pharma 4.0™ vision. The digital transformation of the pharmaceutical landscape is already accelerating innovation within the industry, creating new opportunities for the development of novel therapies. For Pharma Services, a global SampleManager LIMS deployment serves as a critical first step in the pursuit of Pharma 4.0.

“We recognize that the most important part of any digital transformation is going to be that IT foundation,” said Saly Romero-Torres, Senior Director Digital Quality Systems, Pharma Services. Pharma Services provides industry-leading, end-to-end capabilities to simplify the supply chain for its customers. With expertise in drug development, clinical trial logistics and commercial manufacturing, Pharma Services’ flexible business models and global network of 55+ sites support customers from development through commercial supply. Pharma Services’ Global Quality Systems leaders say the deployment of SampleManager LIMS software supports the organization’s quality control strategy, and provides immediate benefits to customers and scientists alike. When selecting a LIMS, Romero-Torres said, leadership recognized that a global solution was essential to their Pharma 4.0 vision.

“I think that SampleManager LIMS will be truly transformational to the way that our QC laboratories operate in the future,” said Tanya Tadey, Director of Laboratory Systems and Technology, Pharma Services. Tadey explained that the capabilities of SampleManager LIMS software position the business for future success. The software provides standardized automated workflows for executing methods and recording data.  Further, Tadey cited the advanced data analytics capabilities and key performance indicators as a business enabler. Finally, Tadey believes the centralized data storage SampleManager LIMS provides will facilitate collaboration among teams and different sites throughout the business.

Building a connected lab ecosystem

For Bill Weiser, Senior Director Quality Systems, Global Quality Assurance, Pharma Services, the prospect of a connected lab ecosystem built with SampleManager LIMS is intriguing. As Weiser and the Pharma Services team planned their implementation, they analyzed the connectivity needs of the business and its laboratories. Understanding which systems needed to talk to each other and how those connections could be made was critical.

“Having a LIMS platform that enables that sort of connectivity, to connect with manufacturing data, to connect with release data, to connect with stability data, to pull all of that together, and demonstrate that ability to connect these disparate systems to gain that holistic knowledge is really vital for our ability to manufacture effective pharmaceutical products in the 21st century,” Weiser said.

Moving forward, Pharma Services plans to integrate SampleManager LIMS with its chromatographic data systems, enterprise resource planning systems, scheduling system and compliance system. “The future is really very exciting on this because we’ll spend much less time collecting data or looking at reports or printouts and really focus much more on integrating and making sound decisions for product quality.”

With the adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies like data analytics and smart/intelligent automation, and immersive technologies like SampleManager XR, the digital transformation is revolutionizing pharmaceutical manufacturing. Tadey believes Pharma Services is well positioned to meet the Pharma 4.0 operating model with SampleManager LIMS. “I think that with the overall trend in the pharma industry towards a digital Pharma 4.0 operating model, the highest performing and most successful QC labs of the future will be those with a high degree of automation and paperless digital processes.”
