It’s a busy time of year. Last week we were at Coal Prep — the gathering place for the international coal preparation community. Next week, we’ll be at CIM Convention 2015 in Montreal, the show of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. CIM has over 14,600 members, convened from industry, academia and government, and boast that with 10 Technical Societies and over 35 Branches, their members help shape, lead and connect Canada’s mining industry, both within the borders and across the globe. The show is big and it’s international. Since it is in Montreal — where French is the majority language — there is always a high representation of mining people from French speaking countries — namely Africa – and it’s great to meet with customers and experts outside North America who might have a different perspective. According to the show website, “New Dimensions” is the theme that will drive topics of discussion at the upcoming 2015 CIM Convention taking place May 10 to 13, 2015. In addition to a rigorous technical program, mining will be examined through the lens of employment, innovation, leadership, management, and more. Over 6,000 mining industry professionals are expected to take in the events at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal. The Expo section will feature nearly 500 companies showcasing the latest in mining equipment, tools, technology and products. I’ll be in Booth #1328 demonstrating how our highly integrated range of instruments, equipment, consumables and laboratory information management software addresses all segments of the mining process, from early stage exploration through processing. We’ll discuss belt conveyor scale integrators, metallurgical sampling systems, and show how a multi-element probe can provide continuous in stream analysis without the need for liquid nitrogen. Stop by and meet our application experts to discuss your analysis and material handling challenges. If you have some extra time and can spend a few days in the area, there is plenty to do in Montreal. I especially like Old Montreal, the Notre-Dame Basilica, and the Museum of Archaeology and History (where you can hop in the elevator and head underground to see what an archaeological dig has revealed about the foundations of the city’s original settlement). If you’re looking for some dining in the area, restaurants per capita is very high. Not to be missed, Gibbys in old Montréal with its great steak, double baked potatoes, and pickles. Ever hear of “poutine” (aka A heart attack in a bowl)? Invented in a small town in Quebec, this dish of French fries with cheese curds and BBQ sauce covering the whole thing is the ultimate comfort food, and you can find 30 varieties of it at La Banquise. If you find yourself in mile end, pick up a dozen of the best bagels in the area at St-Viateur Bagels. (Which is what I did). No worries about closing time; they are open 24 hours a day (and there have been many celebrity sightings there). If you can’t make it to the show, visit our event page. Sorry we can’t offer you any poutine, pickles, or bagels, but you can take a look at what you would have seen at our booth.
