Simulation-Based Tortuosity Estimation of Porous Media

This Xtra provides four methods for calculating the tortuosity factor based on these XLab properties: Absolute Permeability, Molecular Diffusion, Formation Factor, and Thermal Conductivity.

Tortuosity-package

Diffusional Tortuosity:

This module computes the tortuosity based on the computed Molecular Diffusion result of the "Molecular Diffusivity Experiment Simulation" module.

This module needs to be attached to the spreadsheet that includes the Apparent Molecular Diffusivity value.

As the second input, this module needs the binary data representing the pore phase. When attached to the spreadsheet, the module tries to retrieve this binary data automatically. If necessary, it is possible to manually select the right binary input from the "Binary image" port.

The output is a spreadsheet that includes the "Diffusional Tortuosity" value.

Thermal Tortuosity:

This module computes the tortuosity based on the computed Molecular Diffusion result of the "Thermal Conductivity Experiment Simulation" module.

This module needs to be attached to the spreadsheet that includes the Apparent Thermal Conductivity value.

As the second input, this module needs the binary data representing the pore phase. When attached to the spreadsheet, the module tries to retrieve this binary data automatically. If necessary, it is possible to manually select the right binary input from the "Binary image" port.

The output is a spreadsheet that includes the "Thermal Tortuosity" value.

Electrical Tortuosity:

This module computes the tortuosity based on the computed Formation Factor result of the "Formation Factor Experiment Simulation" module.

This module needs to be attached to the spreadsheet that includes the Formation Factor value.

As the second input, this module needs the binary data representing the pore phase. When attached to the spreadsheet, the module tries to retrieve this binary data automatically. If necessary, it is possible to manually select the right binary input from the "Binary image" port.

The output is a spreadsheet that includes the "Electrical Tortuosity" value.

Flow Tortuosity:

This module computes the tortuosity based on the computed Flow Velocity vector field result of the "Absolute Permeability Experiment Simulation" module.

This module needs to be attached to the vector field volume data.

As the second input, this module needs the binary data representing the pore phase. When attached to the spreadsheet, the module tries to retrieve this binary data automatically. If necessary, it is possible to manually select the right binary input from the "Binary image" port.

The output is a spreadsheet that includes the "Flow Tortuosity (Magnitude)" and/or "Flow Tortuosity (Streamlines)" values, depending the method selected.

To test the various methods, the scripts can be tested with the XLab tutorial hx project files stored in the installation directory in the data\tutorials\xlab folder. The Xtra also contains documentation that explains precisely how to use the scripts and the inputs to which they should be attached.
