A closer look at urinary tract microbiome detection

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are not only prevalent, but can be recurrent, chronic, and even lethal. Dedicated research using the correct tools for identifying the cause of infection is key to combatting them effectively.

While most common UTIs may be discovered with culture-based methods, the detection of severe, higher-risk UTIs benefits from the added assurance of real-time PCR (qPCR) technology.

PCR, when combined with standard culture methods, allows for a level of sensitivity that can uncover the more dangerous, complicated infections that might otherwise be missed. In addition, because PCR can detect and identify multiple targets, it can reveal the specific pathogens causing the infection and ensure the correct methods are used to combat them. This specificity is a benefit for mitigating all UTIs, especially when choosing an appropriate antibiotic, should one be needed.

Applied Biosystems Urinary Research Panels are real-time PCR syndromic panels designed to enable rapid analysis of a wide range of urinary tract microbiota in a scalable, low-cost per sample format in under five hours.

Fast results

Our real-time PCR solution is optimized to deliver results in 5 hours—faster than traditional culture-based methods.  A complete, simple, and straightforward end-to-end solution is available to enable the processing of tens to hundreds of samples per day with minimal hands-on time.

Detects slow-growing or difficult-to-culture uropathogens

Ambiguous results are frustrating and time-consuming. Avoid ambiguity by including real-time PCR techniques and TaqMan assays during UTI research. The TaqMan OpenArray Urinary Tract Microbiota Comprehensive Plate enables a convenient and confident identification of up to sixteen targeted bacteria. The plate quickly detects and categorizes the specific microorganisms present in the urinary tract microbiome to reveal the cause for infection with a level of assurance that can’t be achieved through culture methods alone.

Scalable qPCR workflow

The QuantStudio Family of real-time PCR instruments can meet any throughput requirement. For higher throughput laboratories, leverage our OpenArray nanofluidic technology. This technology allows labs to process up to 600 urine samples per day on a single instrument.  A complete end-to-end solution is available and includes the Thermo Scientific KingFisher Flex benchtop automated DNA/RNA extraction instrument, convenient extraction and purification kits, and the OpenArray AccuFill System. Combined, these systems can automate sample prep and liquid handling to enable the processing of hundreds to thousands of samples per day.

Whether you already own an instrument are or considering an expansion of your capabilities, your sample processing and throughput requirements can be addressed through the different formats compatible with your instrument (such as TaqMan array cards, 96- or 384-well plates, or single tube assays) with made-to-stock or custom panels.  Learn more about how OpenArray Technology can be an ideal solution for handling large numbers of research samples.
