Australia’s national science agency CSIRO is solving the greatest challenges through science and technology.
In early 2023, CSIRO conducted a tender process for an enterprise LIMS solution and selected Thermo Fisher Scientific to provide an enterprise LIMS to centralise and standardise intake, analysis and reporting across CSIRO’s labs.
In this article we will dive into how Thermo Scientific™ SampleManager™ LIMS software will support CSIRO’s laboratories.
CSIRO
CSIRO is Australia’s National Science Agency and is one of the world’s largest multidisciplinary science and technology organisations. With over 5,600 people working across 53 sites in Australia and globally, CSIRO is committed to unlocking a better future for everyone.
To enhance and extend their current digital capabilities within their labs, CSIRO is seeking to further transform their laboratory landscape by centralising and standardising intake, analysis and reporting across their labs.
Benefits of an enterprise LIMS
A LIMS can streamline workflows within the available physical and virtual lab space and automate certain parts of the workflow to improve efficiency. It provides end-to-end data management and the ability to connect all aspects of the lab.
An enterprise LIMS approach is more cost-effective compared to multiple small deployments and allows for the development of in-house support for configuration and workflow mapping and provides a holistic view to share data collaboration and standards. Furthermore, an enterprise LIMS meets cybersecurity and ISO/GxP/QA standards, ensuring data security and compliance as well as supporting the future needs for data mining.
Motivation for SampleManager LIMS
After CSIRO’s tender process for an enterprise LIMS, Thermo Fisher was selected to provide a SampleManager LIMS, which provides robust sample management, instrument management, inventory, barcoding, and reporting capabilities.
It will offer integration and connectivity features to enable integration with various instruments, which will enable a flow of sample data between instruments and the LIMS, enhancing efficiency and data management.
SampleManager LIMS can be easily adapted to different research activities across multiple labs and business units, providing CSIRO with the necessary flexibility to meet their evolving needs.
SampleManager LIMS coupled with its managed cloud hosted architecture, will ensure compliance with the cyber threat mitigation strategies of the Australian Government’s Cyber Essential 8 Maturity Model. This will provide CSIRO with greater assurance that the important data and Intellectual Property generated through its laboratory activities is safe and secure.
Additionally, SampleManager LIMS can be configured to support ISO 17025 compliance, which will support CSIRO’s NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) accreditation. This accreditation is essential for guaranteeing the quality and reliability of CSIRO’s laboratory processes.
Partnering for success
Overall, SampleManager LIMS solution will provide CSIRO with scalability, flexibility, security, and compliance features. This partnership will enable CSIRO to streamline their workflows and enhance data management and connectivity across their laboratories.
CSIRO Chief Technology Officer Angus Macoustra said:
“CSIRO is committed to bringing an enterprise-wide, secure and sustainable digital evolution to our labs and having one enterprise-wide LIMS system will help CSIRO with collaboration between our science areas. Standardising towards an enterprise-wide solution puts in place the foundation for shared and reusable data that is key for future transformational opportunities such as AI for Science.
“The enterprise LIMS will help us automate the collection of data and generate results so they can be easily shared across CSIRO labs or with our customers.”
