Powering Digitalization in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

For pharmaceutical manufacturers, a fully integrated network of laboratories can deliver significant benefits. Digital transformation programs are helping pharmaceutical organizations worldwide overcome data silos, resulting in productivity improvements, strengthened resilience to disruption and greater job satisfaction for scientists.

In a recent edition of Pharma Manufacturing, Drs. Moussa Saleh and Christian Mueller outlined the case for digitalization  in pharmaceutical manufacturing. They looked at the common challenges pharmaceutical manufacturing laboratories face in building a connected infrastructure, and the impact of those challenges (data integrity issues, reduced productivity, etc.). The authors then detailed how a holistic data strategy coupled with advanced data solutions can help organizations overcome data silos and unconnected systems.

Drs. Saleh and Mueller then explored a recent use case at a large pharmaceutical company, using six disconnected systems and over 1,000 disconnected instruments in its Chemical and Pharmaceutical Development (CPD) department. The team worked to overcome large differences between sites and departments and inconsistent LIMS usage, building a holistic data strategy incorporating every system. The company chose Thermo Scientific™ SampleManager LIMS™ software to manage the laboratory, data and procedural workflows, and connect with other enterprise systems, instruments and equipment. The built-in integration solution was used to build cross-connectivity between the LIMS, ELN, CDS, SDMS as well as the instruments and equipment used in the lab.

With the improved integration capabilities, the company achieved a 20 percent improvement in efficiency, along with improvements to both data quality and integrity. Transcription errors were reduced, and the laboratories now benefit from the security of a full audit trail, including a risk-based audit system.
